malcolm mclaren will be remembered as a figure who had a tremendous influence on british culture. in terms of music, punk was one of the most important developments of modern times. and without malcolm mclaren, punk may never have exploded in the way that it did. he was instrumental in selling the idea and image of punk to the public, especially through the sex pistols. he helped to create the band's unique look as well as their publicity-attracting attitude. mclaren famously organised a boat trip down london's river thames so the sex pistols could perform their version of god save the queen outside the houses of parliament, during the week that the queen was celebrating her silver jubilee. the boat was raided by the police, and mclaren was arrested. the headlines that inevitably followed helped to fortify his and the band's controversial reputation. for many artists he embodied the idea they could successfully challenge the musical establishment. it is an idea that inspired a generation of musicians, and still endures today.

woke up to the sound of a text message coming in at four in the morning. it was from my brother in washington state, warning me from that a tsunami was coming my way. i turned on the news to find that chile was hit by one of the most powerful earthquakes to be recorded, at 8.8 magnitude, prompting tsunami warnings to be issued throughout the pacific region. most businesses were closed for a few hours and the people living in the coastal areas were evacuated, but noon went by without any major incident—we were spared.

all that pressure, all those expectations. kim yu-na could feel the weight on her dainty shoulders. the "queen" took it all on and delivered royally. a gold medal. a world record. a women's figure skating performance that likely will be remembered as one of the best of all time. the south korean soared to the olympic gold medal thursday night, scoring 228.56 points and shattering her previous world record by more than 18 points. longtime rival mao asada of japan won the silver medal, but it was no contest—even with asada landing both her triple axels, one in combination with a double toe loop. asada was more than 23 points behind kim, a margin so big kim could have done nothing but figure 8s for the last half of her program and still finished in front. in fact, kim's score was so off the charts, it would have put her ninth in the men's competition—even though they skate 30 seconds longer and do an extra jump.

the only time i got the chance to see mayor fasi in person was during the 2004 mayoral debate at the hawaii theatre center. i felt that his viewpoints were a little "out there" (i ended up voting for the late duke bainum that year), but i can't deny the enormous role he has played in shaping modern honolulu—the city that i love and the city that i call home. rest in peace, mayor fasi.
